07 How we built this page

People deserve the truth. We're here to prove it.

The supplement industry is built on claims. Bold labels. Vague blends. Marketing language designed to make you trust without checking. We think that's wrong.

You deserve to know exactly what you're putting in your body. The real research, the real doses, the real names. Not a tagline. Not a bullet point on the back of a bag. The actual studies, the actual numbers, the actual proof.

So that's what comes next. Four ingredients, in order. Each one with the studies behind it, the doses that worked, and what the research actually found. Starting with the most replicated mineral in sleep science.

Ingredient 01

Magnesium glycinate

A mineral most adults are quietly short on.

Ingredient 01

Magnesium glycinate

200mg Sourced from the USA

A mineral most adults are quietly short on.

What it is

Magnesium is a mineral your body needs every single day to function. You get small amounts from food: leafy greens, nuts, seeds, dark chocolate. But modern diets and depleted soils mean about half of all adults don't get enough. Magnesium glycinate is the form bound to glycine, an amino acid that helps your body absorb it gently without the stomach issues that come with cheaper forms.

What it does

Magnesium calms the nervous system. It tells your body it's safe to stop, slow down, and switch off. When you're low, your body stays in low-grade fight-or-flight mode, even at night. That's why low magnesium is linked to restless sleep, muscle tension, and waking up at three in the morning for no reason. Topping it up gives your body the raw material it needs to wind down properly.

Where it's from

We source our magnesium glycinate from an FDA-registered facility in the United States. American production gives us the highest batch traceability and the strictest quality controls. Every batch comes with a Certificate of Analysis confirming it is true bisglycinate, not the cheaper buffered version that most brands hide behind a similar-sounding name. We pay more for the form that actually works.

What this means for you

If you wake up at three in the morning, feel tense before bed, or struggle to switch off, low magnesium is often part of the story. This puts it back.

Every scoop of SF Zero delivers 200 milligrams of true magnesium bisglycinate. That is the same dose used in the trials above. Not a tenth of it. Not buried inside a proprietary blend. The full clinical amount, in the form your body absorbs gently, sourced from a US facility that documents every single batch.

You drink one warm cup before bed. Your body gets the mineral it has been quietly missing all day.

Ingredient 02

L-theanine

The amino acid that quiets a racing mind without sedation.

Ingredient 02

L-theanine

200mg Sourced from Japan

An amino acid that quiets a racing mind.

What it is

L-theanine is a natural compound found almost only in green tea leaves. It's the reason a cup of green tea feels calming instead of jittery, even though it contains caffeine. The version we use is called Suntheanine, made in Japan to medical-grade standards. It's the same version researchers used in their studies.

What it does

L-theanine puts your brain into a calm-focus state. Awake but relaxed, like the feeling after a long walk. It quiets the mental chatter that keeps you replaying the day at midnight. It doesn't sedate you, doesn't knock you out, doesn't leave you groggy. It just turns down the volume on the part of your brain that won't stop talking.

Where it's from

We source our L-theanine from Japan, where it is produced under the strictest quality standards. Japanese sourcing matters because the purity of L-theanine varies a lot between regions. The Japanese version is the only one researchers have actually tested. It's the form your body has been studied with, not a cheaper substitute.

Ingredient 03

Apigenin

The compound in chamomile that calms without knocking you out.

Ingredient 03

Apigenin

50mg Sourced from Egypt

The calming compound in chamomile, at a real working dose.

What it is

Apigenin is the natural compound that makes a cup of chamomile tea feel calming. You'll find it in chamomile flowers, parsley, and celery. People have used chamomile to help with sleep for thousands of years, but the amount you get from a cup of tea is small. Our 50mg is the concentrated version, the same dose sleep researchers and doctors use.

What it does

Apigenin works on the same calming receptors in your brain as common anxiety medications, but much more gently. It doesn't sedate you or knock you out. It just turns off the alarm bells your brain rings when it's time to let go of the day. The result: easier wind-down, deeper rest, no morning fog.

Where it's from

We source our apigenin from Egypt, where the chamomile plant has been grown for over 4,000 years. Egyptian chamomile is known for the highest natural concentration of apigenin, which means a cleaner extract and a more reliable result. Every batch comes with paperwork confirming purity and strength.

If chamomile tea has ever helped you relax but never quite gotten you all the way there, this is why. You weren't getting enough.

Every scoop of SF Zero contains 50 milligrams of pure apigenin from Egyptian chamomile. That is the same dose sleep researchers and doctors actually use. Not a hint of it like in tea. Not buried inside a mix that hides the real number. The concentrated calming compound, at the strength that does the work.

Ingredient 04

Ashwagandha KSM-66

The ancient root that turns down the stress hormone keeping you awake.

Ingredient 04

Ashwagandha KSM-66

300mg Sourced from India

The root that lowers the stress hormone waking you up at 3 a.m.

What it is

Ashwagandha is a root that has been used in India for over 3,000 years to help the body handle stress. It's what's called an adaptogen, a plant that helps your body adjust to whatever it needs to handle. The version we use is called KSM-66, the most researched form on the market, with more than 40 human studies behind it.

What it does

Ashwagandha lowers cortisol, the stress hormone that keeps your body wired and is one of the main reasons people wake up at 3 in the morning for no clear reason. When your cortisol stays high in the evening, your body cannot fully switch off. Bring it down, and your sleep gets deeper, longer, and less interrupted.

Where it's from

We source our ashwagandha from India, the country where the plant has grown and been used for thousands of years. KSM-66 specifically comes from the roots of the plant, slowly extracted using a method that keeps the active compounds intact. Every batch is tested and comes with paperwork confirming strength and purity.

What this means for you

If you fall asleep just fine but wake up at 3 a.m. and cannot get back, this is the ingredient your body has been missing. It lowers the alarm bell before it rings.

Every scoop of SF Zero contains 300 milligrams of pure KSM-66 ashwagandha from India. That is the dose proven to lower cortisol in real clinical studies. Not a fraction of it. Not generic ashwagandha that lacks the same research backing. The exact form, at the exact dose, that the science actually used.

You drink one warm cup before bed. Your body gets the support it needs to keep cortisol calm through the night, so you stay asleep until morning.

05

The supporting ingredients

Six ingredients that make this a drink worth drinking. Each one chosen with the same care.

The full formula

Not all research is about sleep. Some is about quality.

The four ingredients above do the work on sleep. These six make it a drink you actually want to make every night. But that doesn't mean they got in for free.

Each one was chosen based on real research, just a different kind. Research about how your body absorbs things, how plants are grown, and what actually ends up doing something. Every choice has a reason behind it, and a source you can check.

Natural cacao powder

4g Sourced from Peru

Real raw cacao, not the smoother kind most brands use. The difference matters: the smoothing process destroys up to 78% of the good stuff in cacao. Our cacao keeps it in. It also gives you small natural amounts of magnesium, the building block your body uses to make its own sleep hormones.

Coconut milk powder

1g Sourced from the Philippines

Adds creaminess to the drink and helps your body absorb the ingredients that need fat to work, like apigenin. Some things just don't get into your body without a bit of fat to carry them. We use the version without hidden filler powders, which most coconut milk products contain.

Vanilla bean powder

150mg Sourced from Mexico

Real ground vanilla beans, not the lab-made "natural vanilla flavor" hidden on most labels. Mexican vanilla is the original vanilla, used together with cacao by the Aztecs for thousands of years. Its flavor is warmer and spicier than the more common Madagascar version, which pairs better with raw cacao.

Monk fruit extract

50mg Sourced from China

A natural sweetener from a small green melon grown in southern China, used as medicine there for over 800 years. About 200 times sweeter than sugar, with zero calories and zero effect on your blood sugar. We chose monk fruit because stevia and erythritol leave a cooling aftertaste in warm drinks, the most common complaint about competitor products.

Himalayan rock salt

50mg Sourced from Pakistan

A small pinch of unrefined salt from ancient seabeds in the Himalayan foothills. This is the same salt every chocolatier adds to dark chocolate, for the same reason: it balances bitterness and brings out the cocoa flavor. Without salt, the drink tastes flat. With salt, the cacao tastes like cacao.

Sunflower lecithin

100mg Sourced from Europe

A natural ingredient from sunflower seeds that helps everything mix smoothly in your warm milk. Without it, the cacao would clump up or sink to the bottom of your cup. Most brands use soy lecithin or hide their version under the label term "natural flavors". We use sunflower because it's allergen-friendly, and we put it right on the label so you know it's there.

Ten ingredients. Four that work on sleep, six that make it a drink worth drinking. Each one chosen because the research backs it up, dosed at the level studies actually used, and named on the label so you know exactly what you're putting in your body.

This is what a real sleep drink looks like. Only proven ingredients. Nothing that doesn't belong.

06

The excluded ingredients

Nine ingredients that didn't make the bar. Each one for a reason.

By design

A formula isn't just what you add. It's what you refuse to add.

Open your kitchen cabinet. Pick up the sleep supplement, melatonin gummies, or sleep tea you've been using. Read the back of the label. Chances are at least three of the nine ingredients below are in there right now.

Some of them are linked to serious health risks. Others don't even reach the part of your body where they're supposed to work. A few are just cheap fillers that bulk up the scoop. None of them belong in a product you take before bed, night after night.

Here's what we left out, and the research that explains why.

Melatonin

0mg A hormone, not a supplement

Melatonin is a hormone your brain already makes. Most sleep products add 10 to 30 times more than your body produces naturally. A 2025 study from the American Heart Association found that people who used melatonin for over a year had a 90% higher risk of heart failure. A 2023 study in JAMA tested 25 melatonin gummies and found that 22 of them contained the wrong dose, some with up to 347% of what the label claimed. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the leading medical authority on sleep, officially recommends against melatonin for adults with sleep problems. We don't use it because we are a sleep brand, not a hormone brand.

L-tryptophan

0mg A hormone in disguise

L-tryptophan is the building block your body uses to make melatonin. Many sleep brands include it at 200mg and call it "natural sleep support". The result is the same as taking melatonin directly: your body produces more sleep hormone than it should. If we say no to melatonin, we also have to say no to the back door that leads to it.

GABA

0mg Doesn't reach the brain

GABA is the calming chemical messenger your brain uses to slow down. Taken as a supplement, it sounds perfect. The problem: oral GABA barely crosses the protective wall around your brain, so most of it sits in your bloodstream doing nothing. It looks great on a label. It doesn't work where it counts. Apigenin works on the same calming receptors and actually reaches the brain. So we use that instead.

Reishi

0mg Weak human evidence

Reishi shows up in almost every sleep product. We considered it for the first version of SF Zero. We removed it after looking at the research. Most reishi sleep studies are in mice, not humans. The few human studies are small or test reishi alongside other mushrooms, so you can't see what reishi alone actually does. A 2024 review of 17 trials rated the evidence quality as "very low" for every outcome measured. To make our cut, an ingredient needs human research behind it.

Zinc

0mg Not a sleep ingredient

Zinc is an important mineral for your immune system. It's often added to sleep products to make the label look more complete or to claim "immune support". The problem: zinc has no strong link to sleep, and it actually competes with magnesium for absorption. Adding zinc would reduce how much magnesium your body can use. On top of that, zinc on an empty stomach before bed often causes nausea. Wrong ingredient, wrong moment.

Magnesium oxide

0mg Cheap form, poor absorption

The cheapest form of magnesium on the market, often hidden inside "magnesium blends" so brands can put "magnesium" on the label without paying for the form that actually works. Your body only absorbs about 4% of magnesium oxide. The rest goes through you without doing anything. Real magnesium glycinate, the form we use, absorbs many times better and is gentle on the stomach. Same mineral. Very different result.

Erythritol

0mg New safety concerns

A sugar substitute often used in low-calorie products. The two reasons we left it out: first, a 2023 study in Nature Medicine linked higher erythritol levels in the blood to nearly double the risk of major heart events like heart attack and stroke over three years. Second, erythritol leaves a cool, mint-like aftertaste in warm drinks. That's why many sleep cocoa products taste off in the last sip. We chose monk fruit instead. Sweet, clean, no aftertaste, no safety questions.

Maltodextrin

0mg A filler, not an ingredient

A cheap powder made from corn or rice that bulks up products so the scoop weight looks more impressive. It spikes your blood sugar faster than table sugar, with a glycemic index around 95 to 110. Eating something that spikes your blood sugar right before bed is exactly the wrong way to fall asleep. A 2023 review also found that maltodextrin negatively affects gut bacteria in many people. Most sleep products contain it. We left it out, which is why our scoop is smaller. Everything in our scoop is doing something.

"Natural flavors"

0mg A label term, not an ingredient

A regulatory term that lets brands hide almost anything behind two words. Under FDA rules, "natural flavors" can contain dozens of unnamed compounds, made in a lab as long as the starting material was once natural. Solvents, preservatives, and flavor extracts all qualify. If you can't read it on the label, you can't know what you're drinking. We name every ingredient in SF Zero, including the vanilla, the salt, and the lecithin. No two-word shortcuts.

Read your labels tonight. If you see one of these nine ingredients in the sleep product you've been taking, take a moment to ask yourself why it's there.

Most sleep products are built around what sells, not what works. You deserve better than that.

07

How we built this page

The standards we used, the sources we trust, and the part where we keep ourselves honest.

The work behind the work

A research page is only as good as the way it was researched.

You've just read a lot of claims. Studies, doses, sources, reasons. Some of them are about what works for sleep. Others are about what doesn't, and why. Before you take any of it at face value, here's how we put this page together.

This section exists because we want you to know exactly what kind of source you're reading. What we counted as evidence, what we left out, and where we might be wrong.

01

The bar an ingredient had to clear.

Three things, every time. Human research behind it, not just animal studies or theory. The dose the research actually used, not a fraction of it. A named source you can check. Miss one, you don't get in.

02

Where the research came from.

Peer-reviewed journals like JAMA and Nature Medicine. Official bodies like the FDA, NIH, and AHA. What we did not use: supplement company websites or studies funded by the makers of the ingredient.

03

Where we are biased.

We sell a sleep drink. That's a real bias. The thing we did to balance it: every claim on this page has a link to a source you can check. If you disagree with our reading, you have what you need to push back.

04

What we'll change when we're wrong.

Research moves. Studies get challenged. New trials change what we should be doing. We update this page when the evidence changes, and we credit anyone who flags something we got wrong.

Spot something off in here? Send what you found to research@sf-zero.com and we'll take a look.

Replace the bottle

Better sleep. Without the hormones. Without the filler.

You read the research. You saw what doesn't belong in a sleep formula. This is what we built instead, and we didn't build it as a chalky pill. We built it as a hot cacao drink. A proper one. Rich, warm, and the kind of thing you actually look forward to at the end of the day.

Your FREE starter kit comes with a 30-serving bag of SF Zero, a milk frother to whip it up properly, an aluminum scoop for the exact dose, and free monthly delivery so you never run out. Everything you need to swap the bottle on your nightstand for the best part of your evening, starting tonight.
